Refreshing your apartment decor and overall design may help you cross those new year’s resolutions off the list faster. Cooking at home more, spend more time doing free activities and saving more money may get a little easier if you create a home that you love.
We dived into designers’ favorite inspiration board, Pinterest, to see what’s hot right now in apartment decor ideas for the new year. Better yet, the top design trends in 2019 are on the affordable end and can quickly add a little more pizzazz to your apartment. Check them out below.
1. Geometric wall accents

If you’re aching to paint your beige living room walls but don’t have the time or money to dedicate a few days to painting, adding a colorful geometric wall accent may satisfy your need for color.
With this wall accent trick, all you need is a small color sample pot, a brush and some painter’s tape. Tape up a few triangles across the wall and get to painting. If you’re short on time, several Etsy sellers sell removable geometric shapes that are easy to apply – and remove when you move out.
2. Vertical garden

Bring the outside in by adding a vertical garden to your apartment – it’s a quick weekend DIY. The best place to start? Your kitchen. Hang a small metal grid panel on your wall with a few hooks and grab a few herbs (think basil, dill, etc.) to add to little pots. If you don’t have enough light in your kitchen, you can easily hang them in your balcony.
3. Pantone color of the year

This year’s Pantone color is living coral and lucky for you, this hue is incredibly versatile to decorate with. Focus on accessories and small items to bring this vibrant color into your neutral space. Think blankets, pillows, hits of it on a rug or artwork and even glassware.
4. Tropical prints

The Palm Springs-themed trend continues into 2019 with succulents, monstera leaves and fiddles taking over design trends. Bring this tropical trend to your bed with a fun comforter or accent pillows that will help you dream of that vacation you’ve always wanted. Another easy way to incorporate it is by framing botanical prints – Society6 has several options.
5. Earthy colors and matte black

Embrace this trend by adding a small matte black lamp to your nightstand. The matte color brings a hint of elegance to the space. Take it a step further by bringing earthy colors into the space to offset the matte black – a few plants (real or not) and natural wood furniture.
6. All floral everything

Kick off spring early by bringing florals into your home. The top interior design trends of this year see florals coming back in a big way – from wallpaper to fabrics. Don’t worry, when done right, it won’t remind you of your grandma’s apartment.
Companies like Walls Need Love offer peel and stick removable wallpaper so you can add a floral wall to your bathroom or bedroom. Go muted black or bright with these pink/red hues.
7. Terrazzo

Initially a trend from the 1980s, terrazzo’s collage of chips of marble, quartz and glass is making a big comeback. While renters don’t have the privilege of demo-ing their bathroom or kitchen in favor of this new tiling trend, you can certainly incorporate it by adding a terrazzo coffee table. It’s a unique way to bring colors into your muted space.
8. Textile art

An easy Shibori weekend DIY project will yield a fun art piece. After you pick your favorite design of the bunch, pick up an affordable frame and hang it inside with small nails. The indigo hues of the Shibori textile will provide an interesting focal point in your living space.
9. 1970s-inspired items

Velvet, rattan textures and muted bright colors are taking over living rooms everywhere as the 1970s are coming back around. Adding rattan chairs to your dining room or a few velvet pillows as a complement to your couch are a great way to incorporate this trend.
You can scour your local thrift store and even Craigslist for some treasure finds. If you want to go after an investment piece, this is the time to save up and purchase that velvet love seat you’ve been eyeing. It will instantly elevate the room.
10. Non-art artwork

Have a hard time picking artwork for your walls? This trend is perfect for you.
Head to your local Goodwill or thrift store and find old windows or ornate picture frames to hang. Paint them similar to your wall color or a fun contrasting color to bring some dimension to your plain walls. Grab a few small ones for a gallery wall or pick a big one to make a statement.
