The 6 Best Apps to Sell Your Stuff (and Earn Side Money)

As any Marie Kondo enthusiast would preach, it’s time to simplify and focus only on the things that bring you joy.

If you can use an app that helps you do just that and make some extra money, why not? So, if you’re ready to part with your stuff, check out the best apps to sell your stuff online and make some money in the process.

1. letgo

You may have seen some TV commercials about letgo, which is an app that helps you list and sell your stuff locally. Think of it like a Craigslist but with a way more intuitive way to communicate with local buyers. It’s free to post your items and you can sell just about anything (from cars to clothing).

All you need to do is take a photo and list it. Your item will then appear in your local area based on your ZIP code.

Letgo is made for people who want to buy and sell locally, so if you sell something, you’ll have to arrange a meeting place, finalize the price and ask the buyer to bring cash.

2. OfferUp

Similar to letgo, OfferUp is another useful selling app that helps you get more eyes on your items. You also have the option to ship your items in the mail, which might be a good way to get rid of smaller items. Keep in mind there are seller fees for shipping, which is a percentage of your item’s final price. (The fee is deducted from the final sale amount.)

OfferUp makes it easy to view the profiles and ratings of other buyers and sellers. This gives you an idea of how frequently the buyer has purchased items, how responsive they are and their general location. OfferUp allows you to get rid of just about anything from furniture to electronics.

3. eBay

If you want to go past your neighborhood to get a bigger audience of buyers, look no further than eBay. The long-time buying and selling platform has evolved over the years and has an easy-to-use app, which lets you easily snap photos of your items and list them.

eBay gives you the option of listing your item on auction (let buyers bid on it), or give it a “Buy it Now” price. You can sell just about anything from cars to antiques (prohibited items listed here).

There are fees for listing your items, including an insertion fee when you create the actual listing, plus a final value fee for when your item sells.

4. Decluttr

Do you have shelves packed full of DVDs and CDs that you’ve collected over the years but you’re ready to get rid of now? Check out Decluttr, an app that buys your unwanted CDs, DVDs, tablets, your old phones and other electronics that are in good condition.

When you download the Decluttr app, you can make use of their barcode scanner and get an instant price quote from them. This means you need to have the DVD and CD covers intact. Decluttr also sends you a printable prepaid shipping label and a box if you don’t have one.

Decluttr is very timely with their payments and you can receive payment the next day via PayPal or direct deposit. Make sure you read Decluttr’s guidelines, as the items you sell need to meet certain conditions.

5. Poshmark

If you have a lot of clothing in good condition, you may want to consider selling on Poshmark. You can list adult and kids clothing for free and Poshmark even sends you a free pre-paid shipping label when you sell an item.

If the price of what you sold is under $15, Poshmark charges you a flat rate of $2.95. For sales more than $15, the fee is 20 percent of the listing price.

The cost of shipping on Poshmark is added to the final price of the sale. Buyers usually pay for shipping, which depends on how heavy the items are.

6. Facebook Marketplace

Facebook is a great way to get your unwanted items noticed, especially if you live in a major city. Facebook Marketplace harnesses the power of those who live near you who want to purchase second-hand goods like TVs, electronics, furniture and kids stuff. There’s no fee to sell your items, all you have to do is post.

Facebook also has a “Buy and Sell Groups” button in the Explore menu. Like many of the other apps listed, it shows you groups that are closest to you and you can also search for your location. In order to sell, you have to join the Facebook group first.

Facebook is a good alternative to Craigslist because it makes it easy for those who live in your area to see your listing. You can also snap a photo of your items and post them on your timeline and share it with friends. Then, ask your friends to share it.

How will you sell?

A great way to get rid of your items is to use a few apps simultaneously. Post clear images that give buyers an exact idea of what the item looks like and how big (or small) it is.

Give it a detailed description and explain why you’ve decided to get rid of it. Then, wait for interested buyers and let the side money trickle in!
